pairI love signs like these. I imagine they were both pretty awesome originally, but add some weather and some time and they are elevated to a whole other typographic level. Big thanks to Jill Bell for sharing her picture taken in Del Mar, CA. It looks like these letters were perfectly kerned at some point in time but leave it to the crazy Q to say “screw that” and mess with a good thing. She’s always making a statement. Exhibit A. All the letters that follow Q aren’t quite sure what to do with themselves. Obviously.
The sign from Cleveland just amazes me. The crazy hand carved letters. The way they fit together in perfect geometric fashion, the beautiful colors…it’s just an awesome example of typography. Even with letters missing, the other letters are holding their own (who needs a C and a H when our D‘s look like this?! and that M! and G! omgggg). Here’s a close up:
