One of my favorite things to compare side by side are pictures of the same type of establishment. It’s always interesting for me to see how the signs and surroundings change based on location. Here are two great examples. What I love about the picture from Pittsburgh is the combination of the ghostsign with the industrial type of lettering. I think it’s such a striking combination, especially with the type of building it sits on.

When we drove through the teeny town of Smithville last winter (look at the snow!), I kept thinking Aw, bless its heart. And I don’t use that expression. It’s just such a cute town. Even the cutest towns have hardware stores though and check this one out. Here’s a close up:

Horrendous kerning. God awful legibility. All caps serifs. The trifecta of doom. Bless its heart.
